Volunteer Information

Roper St. Francis Healthcare is blessed with a team of more than 500 active and dedicated healthcare volunteers. If you are energetic, positive and compassionate and available to serve on a continuing basis, consider contacting us about current opportunities. Available positions change frequently, so contact the volunteer manager in the facility of your choice to discuss where you might best be of service before completing application paperwork. Because of the processing involved, healthcare volunteering is best suited to applicants available to participate on a regular basis. Although many volunteers come two or three days a week, we ask that you plan to serve a four-hour weekly shift.

Application process

Interested in becoming a volunteer? Please fill out our Volunteer Interest Form.

The volunteer application process includes:

  • Interview and application
  • Scheduled orientation session and hospital tour
  • Letter of recommendation from an adult who knows you well (not a relative)
  • Two step TB testing (four visits)
  • Criminal background check
  • Uniforms and placement
  • Introduction and training in your assigned work area

Orientation sessions are held frequently. To learn about available opportunities, please contact the volunteer manager at the facility of your choice from the list below.

Teen volunteering

There are limited roles available for youth volunteers and most opportunities are during daytime hours and summer break. The minimum age is 15. Because of the training and orientation process involved, hospitals should not be considered as simply a place to earn short term assigned community service hours. Contact the Volunteer Manager in the facility you are interested in for further information about available positions or for an interview.

Health Exploration Programs:

Applicants interested in health careers are encouraged to explore the variety of career exploration programs offered at Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

Students interested in one to two day job shadowing experiences or who are enrolled in clinical programs may contact the Student Development Coordinator at: Student.development@rsfh.com

Arts in Medicine

Arts in Medicine logo

The Arts in Medicine program offers regular art events at each hospital. The program is looking for visual artists of all kinds, musicians, performing artists, poets, writers, and other creatives to volunteer their time. If you are interested in volunteering as an artist at Roper St. Francis Hospital, please contact a volunteer manager.

Pet Therapy Program

Pet Therapy dogs bring so much joy to patients, caregivers and visitors. Not only do these dogs and their volunteer handlers make patients feel good, but they also are linked to health benefits. Those include decreasing depression, pain and anxiety, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pet Therapy handlers must become a Roper St. Francis Healthcare volunteer and pet therapy dogs must have a great disposition, certification or license, immunization and vet records.

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, contact a volunteer manager at one of our four hospitals.

To make a donation to support our Pet Therapy Program, go to rsfhfoundation.org/donate and select Pet Therapy in the pull-down menu.
