How to use our specialty pharmacy

We exclusively use e-prescription services for receiving new prescriptions. Upon receiving an e-prescription the pharmacy team immediately starts the process of initiating insurance approval as well as patient assistance, when needed, for high copay prescriptions. Patients are contacted once these items are in place to be updated and for coordination of prescription pickup or delivery.

You’ll be contacted by a team member four to seven days prior to the refill date on your specialty medications. If you would like to contact us, you can reach your respective pharmacy by phone (West Ashley (843) 402-1194 or Berkeley (843) 266-1908). A pharmacy staff member will speak with you to confirm which medication you need and to coordinate your refill.

Some medications can’t be filled at all pharmacies, due to insurance plan requirements or medication availability. If Roper St. Francis Pharmacy is unable to fill a prescription, we will have your provider re-issue it to another pharmacy of your choice or one required by your insurance.

If necessary, Roper St. Francis Pharmacy staff will help coordinate delivery to your home or other approved locations. This includes any special handling or refrigeration that your medications may need throughout delivery. Local home delivery is free through a package carrier to locations in South Carolina.

Some specialty medications require special storage/handling or administration instructions. A pharmacist will counsel you if either of these items pertain to your medication. It is a best practice to wash hands before and after handling any medication.

We ask that patients take precautions and assist the pharmacy by proactively calling about upcoming refills when there is an impending natural disaster, such as a hurricane. However, in the event of a natural disaster clinically trained personnel will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide support for your medication needs. During non-business hours, if your concern is of an urgent medication matter that can’t wait until the next business day, please call (843) 577-6957 and ask for the on-call clinician to be paged. In case of a life-threatening emergency, please call 911.

Satisfaction surveys will be sent via text message to those patients that agree to enrollment in the mobile messaging portion of the Patient Management Program. For prescription status updates, to check on possible prescription delays, to request a prescription transfer, or to report a medication issue please contact either of our pharmacy locations, West Ashley: (843) 402-1194, North Charleston: (843) 266-1908. We encourage our patients to give feedback, whether it be positive or negative, to help us in our quest to constantly improve our services.

Financial assistance

Specialty medications are often expensive, and patients may need help paying for them. Fortunately, there are resources available to help. A big focus for our pharmacy team is to help with specialty medication access. Our pharmacists will work directly with your provider to complete prior authorizations and appeals when necessary to obtain approval for your medications. Our pharmacies also have access to assistance programs that can help with the cost of your medication and staff specially trained in using these resources. These include copay assistance cards and patient assistance programs, through drug manufacturers, as well as financial assistance from several foundations. We’re here to help you navigate the path to getting your medications.

Poison Control

Ensure that all medications are stored up, away and out of sight of children, and in their original containers. If ingestion of any potentially dangerous substance is suspected contact Palmetto Poison Center at (800) 222-1222.

Medication Disposal

For disposal of specialty medications, the best option is to return any unused portion of medication to one of our pharmacies for proper disposal. If it is not possible to return these medications to the pharmacy, there are drug take back days offered by the local Sheriff’s office as well as websites such as disposemymeds.org. Medications should never be flushed down the toilet. As a last resort medications can be mixed with water as well as kitty litter and/or coffee grounds to create and undesirable mixture that can then be disposed of in the trash.
