Nursing Student

Nursing requires various skills that aren't learned in a textbook. Our Student Nurse Extern Program is an eight-week paid program that fosters the development of a student's nursing skills and enhances future success in the nursing profession.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program (August 2025 – August 2026 Graduates)
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals and a medical-surgical clinical course or equivalent before the start of the Extern Program
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Application, resume and cover letter stating reasons candidate believes they should be selected for the position

Program Dates and Application Deadlines

  • The Student Nurse Externship Program starts at the end of May and lasts eight weeks.
  • Application for the summer 2025 session will be accepted from October 15, 2024 – November 15, 2024.

  1. How long is the Student Nurse Extern Program?
    The externship is a 8-week summer program starting at the end May through July.

  2. Will this be a paid externship?
    Yes, this will be a paid externship.

  3. When are applications taken?
    Applications are accepted, starting October 15, 2024. The deadline to apply is November 15, 2024.

  4. Where is the application located? Where do I send it?
    Visit our careers website, go to Search and apply for jobs, then look for the Student Nurse Externship position. The application is completed online.

  5. What are the qualifications?
    • You must be currently enrolled in an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program  
    • Successful completion of Fundamentals and a medical-surgical clinical course or equivalent prior to start of Extern Program in May
    • GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Application, resume and cover letter stating reasons candidate believes he/she should be selected for the position

  6. Are you accepting applications for ADN nursing student?
    No, we are only accepting applications for BSN students.

  7. Can internal employees apply for the externship program?
    Yes, internal employees are eligible to apply.

  8. Where will the Student Nurse Externship be located?
    We will be offering Student Nurse Externs at all of our hospital locations: Roper Hospital (Downtown, Charleston), Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital (West Ashley area of Charleston), Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital, and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital.

  9. Do I need to apply for Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Mount Pleasant Hospital, and Berkeley Hospital?
    No, you only need to submit your application once via our careers website.

  10. How will I know if I have been selected?
    After you have submitted your application and cover letter, selected applicants will be contacted for an interview by the Nurse Recruiter.

  11. Will housing be provided for the externs?
    No, housing will not be provided.

  12. Should I apply for the nurse externship if I am about to graduate from nursing school?
    No, new graduate RN students will want to apply for RN positions online. New graduate RNs can start applying about 2-3 months prior to when they are able to start.

  13. If I am not selected for the Student Nurse Externship program, are there any other positions that nursing students can apply for?
    You can apply for any positions listed on the career website, www.rsfh.com/careers, that you meet the qualifications.  However, nursing students frequently apply for Patient Care Tech, Emergency Department Tech, and Unit Secretary positions.
