Who needs a mammogram?
The Roper St. Francis Breast Cancer experts follow the Society of Breast Imaging/American College of Radiology standards for breast screenings. The recommendation is yearly breast screening to start at age 40 and annually thereafter. If you have specific questions related to your health history, please connect with your healthcare provider. Having regular screening mammograms will decrease your risk of dying from breast cancer.
What is 3D mammography?
3D mammography is the newest tool in breast cancer prevention. It is breakthrough technology that creates a 3D image that is clearer and more accurate. 3D technology takes multiple images of the entire breast, allowing our specialized breast radiologists to see through layers of tissue and examine areas of concern from all angles.
Benefits can include:
- Earlier detection of small breast cancers
- Offers greater accuracy in pinpointing the size, shape and location of abnormalities
- Causes fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests
- Creates clearer images of dense breast tissue
3D Insurance information
Not all insurance providers cover 3D mammography at this time. If you are not covered, you may be responsible for an the additional fee to the hospital. As with all imaging services, the radiologists interpreting your study will bill you separately. 3D mammography is FDA approved and covered under Medicare. The charge is payable through your healthcare savings account (HSA).
