Diagnosing gynecologic cancers

Our team of highly skilled physicians uses a range of procedures and the latest advancements to diagnose gynecologic cancers, beginning with physical and pelvic exam and getting a complete medical history, as well as additional tests that may include:

  • Imaging studies (such as MRI, CT scan or ultrasound)
  • Pap test (in which cervical cells are studied to look for changes)
  • Colposcopy
  • Hysteroscopy 
  • Biopsy

Gynecologic cancer treatment

Depending on the specifics of the diagnosis and cancer stage, treatment options include:

  • Minimally invasive, robotic and reconstructive surgery (Roper St. Francis Healthcare was the first in the region to offer highly precise robotic surgery)
  • Electrocoagulation (heat) therapy or laser ablation (for pre-invasive cancer of the cervix)
  • Radiation therapy, including brachytherapy
  • Chemotherapy or intraperitoneal chemotherapy (injected into the abdomen)
  • Biological therapy
  • Targeted therapies
  • Vaccines
