Roper Hospital, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital earn five out of five stars in federal rating
Roper Hospital and
Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital earned five out of five stars for overall hospital performance on ratings updated this week by the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Roper and Mount Pleasant Hospital were the only two hospitals in the Lowcountry to earn five stars.
Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital earned four stars.
“These ratings demonstrate once again that the care we provide to Lowcountry patients ranks among the best in the country,” said Dr. Chris McLain, interim chief physician officer at Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “The sacred bond between our patients and physicians is the foundation of our healthcare system, and that focus on healing has defined who we are since our founding physicians first met in 1789.
“We are proud of our clinicians and teammates who provide safe, patient-focused care with exceptional results, and we’re grateful to our community for continuing to trust us with their health and well-being.”
Only 407 – or 9 percent – of hospitals nationwide earned five stars in this recent refresh of the ratings. The ratings are based on rigorously tested quality measures including patient experience, mortality, readmission rates and the safety of care.
This latest refresh of the ratings featured a “bell curve” that resulted in most hospitals receiving three or four stars and less assigned one or five stars. Of the 4,586 hospitals included in the star ratings, 228 got one star, 710 received two stars, 1,119 were assigned three stars, 1,136 received four stars and 407 scored five stars.
Trident Medical Center received one star, MUSC received two stars and East Cooper Medical Center received three stars.
The Star Ratings are based on quality data as recent as October 2019 and they are geared at driving systematic improvements in care and safety as hospitals strive to achieve and maintain high ratings.
CMS Administrator Seema Verma said in a media statement that the ratings were refreshed using the existing methodology because “the American people deserve up-to-date information on how hospitals are performing.”
