Roper Hospital Ranked as state’s No. 2 Hospital by U.S. News & World Report
Roper Hospital rose to the No. 2 ranked hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News & World Report in its 2022-2023 Best Hospital rankings. In addition, Roper Hospital’s rehabilitation specialty ranked among the nation’s best at No. 43, and the hospital earned a High Performing rating for twelve procedures and conditions.
Roper Hospital’s strong showing as the No. 2 hospital in the state and tied with Lexington Medical Center represents a significant rise from its No. 6 ranking from last year. The twelve Roper Hospital procedures and conditions – up four from last year — are considered “High Performing,” in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. The High Performing rating is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. Roper’s included: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, colon cancer surgery, heart attack, heart failure, hip fracture, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery and stroke.
Best Hospitals rankings highlighted the system’s three other hospitals for “High Performing” procedures and conditions, including:
- Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital for hip fracture and stroke
- Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital for pneumonia
- Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital for hip fracture and hip replacement
“Every time patients and their loved ones walk through our doors, they deserve safe, high-quality care,” said Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi, president and chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “These rankings are another validation that we are living up to those expectations and prove that Roper St. Francis Healthcare teammates and physicians are working tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the level of care we provide.”
The U.S. News & World Report rankings that were announced Tuesday come on the heels of other highly publicized national rankings for patient care and employee engagement. Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital have received the highest grades from Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a nonprofit started by Fortune 500 business leaders focused on patient safety and outcomes. Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital is also considered a Leapfrog Top Hospital. In addition, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has been honored for the third consecutive year as one of the top 150 Best Places to Work in healthcare.
The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in its 33rd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive quality care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.
For the 2022-2023 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Fewer than half of all hospitals received any High Performing rating, and only four earned this rating in all procedures and conditions. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.
“When patients are considering their options for care, the Best Hospitals ratings are designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in the kind of care they may need,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that’s earned a High Performing rating in a service may be a good option for patients in need of that service and their medical professionals to consider.”
The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as survival rates, patient experience, and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home.
