Roper St. Francis Healthcare is highlighting the positive impact music has on the Lowcountry with a new initiative, Music for the Mind.

Music for the Mind is an outgrowth of the healthcare system’s role as presenting partner of the concert series at Credit One Stadium. It calls attention to the benefits of music while raising awareness of local mental health resources.

“Science has shown that music can have a tremendous benefit to our health,” said Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi, Roper St. Francis Healthcare president and CEO and a lifelong piano player. “Our investment in the Roper St. Francis Healthcare Concert Series shows how we are continuing to care for our community, just as we’ve done for more than 167 years.”

As part of this year’s Roper St. Francis Concert Series, a mural was commissioned as a visual expression of Music for the Mind. Roper St. Francis Healthcare worked with Artist Allison Dunavant to create an art installation of how music and concerts can spark feeling and healing.

The installation will be available for viewing in-person starting tonight before and during the Kenny Chesney show, as well as for each subsequent show in the Roper St. Francis Concert Series. Concert goers are encouraged to take and share photos and their reaction to the mural.

“This gorgeous mural is the core of our Music for the Mind campaign,” said Kathy Smith, vice president & chief marketing and digital officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “It celebrates the diversity and beauty that’s unique to Charleston and shares with the community the role of music, especially in a concert setting, that creates human connection and improves our mind and well-being.”

Another component of the Music for the Mind initiative is a curated playlist of Roper St. Francis Concert Series artists available on either Spotify or Apple Music. Community members are invited to download the playlist to enjoy as well as submit songs that should be added to the playlist.

Additionally, community members are encouraged to share what music means to them, and their responses will be shared on Roper St. Francis Healthcare social media.

Research shows music therapy can have tremendous benefits for various mental health conditions as well as a calming agent for anxiety. Roper St. Francis Healthcare is showcasing available community resources for anyone struggling with mental health illness, addiction or trauma. Those include:
