Roper St. Francis Healthcare urging shelter in place, use ERs only in case of emergency
Roper St. Francis Healthcare is urging people who have decided to stay in the Lowcountry to shelter in place while Hurricane Dorian passes
We are seeing a steady flow of patients in our emergency departments as people have limited treatment options at this time. The public is advised to use the ER for emergencies only. Routine ailments may have to wait until the weather threat is lowered and our regular primary care and Express Care facilities re-open.
All three of our hospital emergency rooms (Roper Hospital, Roper. St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital) will be staffed during the storm, along with our emergency room facility in Moncks Corner.

“Certainly during the storm, we want people to shelter in place. If somebody has a real concern, we’re always here to take care of them. I would I imagine having been through this more than once before, the day after the hurricane is going to be a big day for people coming in since their doctor’s offices have been closed all week.”
Teammates going above and beyond, no matter the weather
All three of our hospitals -- Roper Hospital, Roper. St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, along with our emergency facility in Moncks Corner -- are continuing to serve patients during the storm. Our special emergency teams arrived Wednesday and stayed overnight to help us carry out our mission of “healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence.”
“We are seeing a true spirit of service as our teammates do what they do best - provide compassionate and quality care for our patients, no matter the weather,” said Roper St. Francis Healthcare President and CEO Lorraine Lutton. “From storm preparations to making sure our patients feel comfortable and safe, we are grateful for our entire team of dedicated professionals who deliver exceptional care.”
At our busiest facility, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, we have more than 200 people braving out the storm working in all areas, from patient care to food service, engineering, you name it! Our facility is very busy on Thursday due to the fact EMS crews cannot cross bridges to take patients to other facilities.
Generators ready and supplies are in place
Earlier this week, our engineering teams made their final checks to ensure generators are working and emergency supplies are in place. Our engineering, food service, environmental services and medical teams are all in place and ready to go.
