By 2020, more than 1 million new registered nurses will be needed in the nation's health care system to meet demand, the Department of Health and Human Services has said.

To raise awareness of the national nursing shortage, Roper St. Francis Healthcare held a Spirit of Caring golf tournament June 3 at the Daniel Island Golf Club.

The hospital system hoped to raise at least $50,000 from the tournament to put toward the Roper St. Francis Healthcare Nursing Scholarship for students. Nurses already in the workforce are also eligible for the scholarship if they plan to further their education.

"The nursing shortage is a pretty significant challenge and we want to assist bright candidates that are interested in becoming a nurse," said Lisa Irvin, vice president of nursing at Roper St. Francis.

"All of the money (raised) went towards the scholarship," Irvin said.

"It is safe to say that the event raised approximately $50,000, which is right on target with our goal for this year," said Tricia Crimminger, director of corporate communications for Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

The hospital system has also partnered with nursing schools and nursing programs at Charleston Southern University and Trident Technical College to attract and retain students. It encourages students to apply for the scholarship.

"It's important for nurses to work in an environment that is supportive of nursing," Irvin said.
