Self Testicular Exam

A complete Self Testicular Exam (TSE) takes just three minutes, and it could save your life. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men age 15-34. If detected early, testicular cancer is one of the most easily cured cancers.

Men should perform TSE after a warm bath or shower. The heat causes scrotal skin to relax, making it easier to find anything unusual. You should become familiar with the normal size, shape and weight of your testicles, and perform this simple exam monthly.

Step 1
Using both hands, roll each testicle between your thumb and fingers, applying a slight pressure. It is normal for one testicle to be slightly larger than the other. Examine each testicle thoroughly, and try to find any lumps. Normal testicles should be oval-shaped, slightly firm, and smooth on the sides and front.

Step 2
Examine the epididymis on each testicle. It is the chord-like structure on the top and back of the testicle. It will feel soft and uneven, and may be tender to the touch. The epididymis is the location of most non-cancerous problems.

Step 3
If you do find any lumps, you should contact your doctor immediately. The lump may be due to an infection, and your physician can decide on proper treatment.

Possible Testicular Cancer Warning Signs:
  • Lump on the testicle
  • Heavy sensation in the testicle or groin
  • Dull ache in lower abdomen or groin
  • Unusual enlargement of one of the testicles
